On Wellbeing & Belonging

To me, the mental health and well-being of our children is the leadership challenge of our times. Schools and school leaders talk the talk but don’t always walk the walk.

  1. This one is about my belief that noticing is the most important thing we can do in schools. When children feel that they are noticed, they feel seen and known, which makes them feel loved and like they belong.

2. This one is about leading by noticing:

Noticeship /ˈnəʊtɪs/ʃɪp/ n.informal. The quality or ability that elevates a person or leader to intentionally see something or someone.

3. This one concerns the observation that 80% of (leadership) opportunities often reside with 20% of students. We should set an expectation of providing 100% of opportunities to 100% of students.

4. This one is about how schools and parents have normalised academic rigour (and its debilitating effects on children) as an acceptable and necessary by-product to win in life, particularly where success is defined by being admitted to a prestigious university or college.

5. This one is about the unintended consequences of relying too heavily on exam results to determine a good school and why I think the best schools of the future will lead with holistic and well-being metrics.
